After 40 years in the US, Derek decided to spend the next 40 abroad. He plans to move to increasingly difficult places, stay in each one until it becomes "my place, my people," then move on and do it again, until everywhere from Kazakhstan to Peru to Finland feels like home. It began with one idea in a Steve Pavlina book about seeking surprise.
